  • Summary

    The Docket Staff Attorney will provide guidance on the litigation process to the Docket & Court Services team as well as attorneys and other staff. He/she will review new and updated court rules and communicate significant changes to the Docket team and Office of General Counsel. The Docket Staff Attorney will also review court orders to ensure that related deadlines are properly entered into the docketing system. He/she will assist the Director of Docketing Services with the development of department related training programs for attorneys and staff.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Review court orders and ensure all related Event entries have been accurately calendared by Docket staff.
    • Communicate any significant orders entered in cases with those attorneys to ensure proper deadlines are reflected in the CompuLaw data base.
    • Maintain up-to-date procedural rules for the U.S. District Courts and various State Courts.
    • Prepare summaries of new and revised local court rules and submit to the Director of Docketing Services and Office of General Counsel for review and distribution to appropriate individuals and/or Practice Groups.
    • Act as a resource for attorneys and Docket staff regarding court rules and requirements related to service and filings.
    • Provide feedback to the Director of Docketing Services and other Docket Staff Attorneys regarding staff docketing issues.
    • Provide end of case summaries that reflect outcome (e.g. settlement, trial) so they can be coded and added to the CompuLaw data base.
    • Review CompuLaw Rule Set changes for accuracy and send Court Rule Update Impact Analysis reports to attorneys whose cases will be affected by rule changes.
    • Create and update customized CompuLaw User Rule sets, as needed, for judge’s standing orders, scheduling orders and non-covered jurisdictions.
    • Assist with the development of staff training and/or best practice procedures.
    • Assist with maintenance of knowledge management efforts.
    • Conduct relevant orientation for new associates and lateral transfers.
    • Collaborate with the Director of Docketing Services to develop and present department related CLE accredited trainings for attorneys.
    • Support the Director of Docketing Services with the development of department related training programs for paralegals, project assistants and secretarial staff.
    • Assist with identifying precedents and maintain a database of routine motions for various jurisdictions.
    • Other duties, as assigned.

    Education and/or Experience:

    Required:

    • Law degree (J.D. or equivalent)
    • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
    • Admitted to D.C., Virginia or Maryland State Bar
    • A minimum of 5 years litigation experience
    • Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of federal & state court systems, including electronic filing procedures 

     

    Preferred:

    • Experience with rules-based docketing systems
    • Experience with Patent matters
    • Experience with various Administrative Courts in the D.C. area
