Summary

The Assistant Managing Clerk is responsible for the daily activities of a full-service Docket and Court Services department including the filing, serving and retrieval of court documents either physically or electronically and the processing of incoming court documents (both paper and electronic), docketing relevant dates, and running reports.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides docket and court services support to litigation attorneys, including research, writing, retrieval, submission and/or filing of legal documents in City, State and Federal Courts or with government agencies.
  • Completes all assigned docketing and calendaring work in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Coordinates or serves as project manager for special projects on an as-needed basis.
  • Assists with procedural research assignments and other administrative projects.
  • Serves documents, attends calendar calls, and arranges for service and filing in other jurisdictions.
  • Monitors court's docket for the Firm’s active cases.
  • Maintains docket/calendar for Litigation attorneys.
  • Screens and reviews incoming court documents and office correspondence in order to calculate and capture relevant dates into the Firm’s calendar database/docketing system.
  • Ensures that lawyers are notified of filing deadlines and court appearances.
  • Prepares calendar reports for distribution to the attorneys on a regularly scheduled basis.
  • Performs electronic court filings for state and federal district and appellate courts.
  • Reviews, for form and procedural compliance, documents served and filed by the Firm.
  • Maintains litigation case calendars.

Education and/or Experience:

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Excellent organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Suite - specifically, Word & Excel, along with Adobe Acrobat, Outlook and PowerPoint.

 

Preferred:

  • Prior experience in a law firm is highly preferred.
  • Experience with rules-based calendaring software (e.g. CompuLaw or ProLaw).
  • Demonstrated familiarity with federal, state and local court systems, including electronic filing systems.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with New York Civil Practice Law & Rules and Federal Rules of Civil Procedure.
